Ginza is widely known as a hub of luxury brands and refined culture, but it is also a district where traces of ancient faith quietly endure within the modern cityscape. Many historic department stores and commercial buildings house small shrines and Jizo statues on their rooftops, while tucked-away spots like Toyoiwa Inari Shrine offer a glimpse into the spiritual side of this glamorous district.
These hidden places serve as reminders of the deep-rooted traditions that continue to coexist with Ginza’s contemporary urban landscape.
As you walk through the area, you’ll also encounter iconic landmarks such as the Wako Building’s clock tower and the grand façade of the Kabukiza Theatre, both testaments to Ginza’s seamless blend of tradition and modernity. This tour offers a unique perspective on Ginza beyond its well-known shopping and dining scene, highlighting the contrast between towering skyscrapers and the sacred spaces that have stood the test of time.

Tsukiji Hongwan-ji Temple
The name "Tsukiji" means "reclaimed land," reflecting its origins as an area created through land reclamation. In 1657, the Great Meireki Fire destroyed the original Nishi Hongwan-ji Temple near Asakusa. Following this disaster, the Tokugawa shogunate granted permission for the temple to be rebuilt in what is now Tsukiji, with the help of settlers from Tsukuda Island, who played a crucial role in reclaiming the land.
This marked the beginning of the Tsukiji district.
Tsukiji Hongwan-ji is deeply connected to this history of reconstruction. Initially rebuilt as a traditional wooden temple, it suffered another devastating loss in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. The current structure, completed in 1934, features a unique blend of Indian and Southeast Asian architectural influences.
Unlike typical Japanese Buddhist temples, it incorporates elements such as a pipe organ, stained glass windows, and intricately carved stonework. These design choices reflect the vision of then-chief priest Itō Yuishin, who aimed to create an open and globally connected temple.
Beyond being a place of worship, Tsukiji Hongwan-ji stands as a symbol of resilience and an integral part of Tsukiji’s development. The surrounding area was once home to a foreign settlement in the late 19th century, and it also served as the location where Fukuzawa Yukichi, a key figure in Japan’s modernization, established his Dutch Studies School, which later became Keio University.
On this tour, you will pass by Tsukiji Hongwan-ji, where you can admire its distinctive exterior and learn about its historical significance. From there, the tour continues to the lively Tsukiji Outer Market, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage and culture of the Tsukiji district.
Tsukiji Outer Market
From Tsukiji Hongwan-ji, we step into the vibrant Tsukiji Outer Market, a paradise for food lovers and a crucial part of Japan’s culinary heritage.
Though the wholesale fish market relocated to Toyosu in 2018, Tsukiji Outer Market remains a bustling center of food culture, where traditional flavors and expert craftsmanship thrive.
As you stroll through its narrow alleys, you’ll encounter a dazzling variety of food stalls and specialty shops, offering everything from fresh seafood and sushi to Japanese street snacks like tamagoyaki (savory-sweet omelet) and senbei (rice crackers).
Many vendors have been perfecting their craft for generations, and their passion for quality food is evident in every dish.
Our knowledgeable guide will share insights into Japanese culinary traditions and explain why Tsukiji remains a beloved destination for chefs and food enthusiasts alike. Although meals are not included, you are free to note interesting food stalls and return after the tour to enjoy some delicious local delicacies.
